Most people only look for a lawyer when something big is happening: buying a home, a dispute, a will, a divorce, a business deal. It can feel intimidating, but choosing one is a lot like choosing any other professional.
Find someone who does this kind of work
Law is specialised. A lawyer who handles property sales every week will be quicker and more confident with your purchase than a generalist. When you call, describe your situation in a sentence or two and ask directly how often they handle matters like it.
Use the first conversation well
Many firms offer a short first call or meeting. Bring a one-page summary of what’s happened, the key dates and any documents. Then ask:
- How do you charge: hourly, fixed fee or another arrangement?
- Roughly what will this cost, and what could make it cost more?
- Who will actually work on my matter day to day?
- How and how often will you update me?
Get it in writing
Before work starts, you should receive an engagement letter or agreement that sets out what they’ll do, what they’ll charge and how billing works. Read it, and ask about anything that isn’t clear. That’s normal, not awkward.
Trust your instincts
You’ll be sharing personal details with this person. If they don’t listen, rush you or can’t explain things in plain words, it’s fine to keep looking.
