When an air conditioner struggles through another summer, the question comes up every time a technician visits: fix it again, or start fresh? There isn’t one right answer, but there is a sensible way to think about it.
Things that point towards repair
- The system is fairly young and has been looked after
- The fault is a single part, like a capacitor, fan motor or thermostat
- It still keeps the house comfortable once it’s running
Things that point towards replacement
- It’s needed several repairs in the last couple of years
- Some rooms never cool down properly, however long it runs
- Your energy bills keep creeping up for the same comfort
- The technician mentions a major part like the compressor
A useful rule of thumb many technicians use: if a repair costs a large share of what a new system would, and the unit is already near the end of its expected life, replacement is usually the better long-term spend.
Get a second opinion on big calls
If someone recommends a full replacement, it’s reasonable to ask another company to take a look. A good contractor won’t mind. Ask both for written quotes that name the equipment, the size of the system and what’s included in installation.
Maintenance helps either way
Clean or replace filters regularly, keep plants and clutter away from the outdoor unit, and book a service before the hot season starts rather than during the first heatwave, when everyone else is calling too.
